Therapy

In addition to Chiropractic our office offers the following physiological therapeutic procedures:

Intersegmental traction: For patients suffering from low back pain, there is Intersegmental Traction, which is designed to specifically target the lumbar curve, restoring your lumbar spine to it's appropriate degree of curvature. Intersegmental traction is a means of inducing passive motion into your spine for the purpose of increasing mobility and stretching spinal joints. The discs of your spine have a poor blood supply. Proper spinal movement allows needed proteins/nutrients to enter the disc. This also allows for the removal of waste, decreasing the likelihood of bone spur formation (degenerative arthritis). A lack of proper circulation can lead to disc thinning and degeneration of the spine.

Flexion distractionFlexion-distraction is also known  as “spinal-distraction”,  “non-surgical spinal decompression”, or “decompression traction” has become the most widely used non-surgical approach to treating spinal disc problems/disc bulges that cause low back pain and frequently, leg pain. Additionally, it allows for treatment when symptoms are too acute or too severe to allow traditional chiropractic adjustments. Surprisingly, there is no pain involved in this treatment. It is actually quite gentle and relaxing.

Flexion-distraction uses a specialized table that provides gentle stretching (“distraction”) of the individual spinal segments, thus reducing pressure inside the disc. Flexion-distraction allows the physician to isolate the area of disc problem.

The result is a “de-compression” of the discs and nerves.

Interferential: or (IFC) is essentially a deeper form of TENS.  The high frequency carrier waveform penetrates the skin more deeply than a regular TENS unit, with less user discomfort for a given level of stimulation. Listed bellow are the effects gained from this electrical therapy.

  1. An increase in localized blood flow which can improve healing by reducing swelling (the additional blood flowing through the area takes edematous fluid away with it) and as a result helps remove damaged tissue and bring nutrients necessary for healing to the injured area

  2. The stimulation of local nerve cells that can have a pain reducing/anaesthetic effect due to potentially blocking the transmission of the pain signals (pain gate mechanism) or by stimulating the release of pain reducing endorphins (opioid mechanism).

  3. Relaxation of  muscle spasms can be achieved through external application of an electrical current, overcoming some of the muscle inhibition often caused by local injury and swelling.

  4. Increased permeability  of the cell membrane which helps ion movement to and from cells thus promoting healing.

LaserCold Laser Therapy or Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is a treatment that utilizes specific wavelengths of light to interact with tissue and is thought to help accelerate the healing process. It can be used on patients who suffer from a variety of accute and chronic conditions in order to help eliminate pain, swelling, reduce spasms and increase functionality. The laser is placed directly over the injured area for 30 seconds to several minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated and the dose provided by the cold laser unit. During this time, the non-thermal photons of light that are emitted from the laser pass through the skins layers (the dermis, epidermis, and the subcutaneous tissue or tissue fat under the skin). Once the light energy passes through the layers of skin and reaches the target area, it is absorbed and interacts with the light sensitive elements in the cell. This process can be compared to photosynthesis in plants - sunlight is absorbed by plants, which is then converted to usable energy so that the plant can grow. When cells absorb this light energy, it initiates a series of events in the cell that is theorized to eventually result in normalizing damaged or injured tissue, a reduction in pain, inflammation, edema and an overall reduction in healing time by increasing intracellular metabolism.1,2
